Milestones
  • Hutchison Ports Properties (HPP), a joint venture between HPH and HWP, announces the acquisition of the Lucayan Beach Hotel, the Grand Bahama Beach Hotel and an adjacent vacant site from the Government of the Bahamas. The existing hotels are refurbished and the site are redeveloped into a luxurious hotel and a convention centre.

  • The Cheung Kong Group announces a proposal for a major reorganisation which is completed on 10 March. As a result of the reorganisation :
    (1) CKH's interest in HWL increases to 48.95 per cent
    (2) HWL's interest in CKI increases to 84.58 per cent
    (3) HWL transfers its interest of 35.01 per cent in HEH to CKI
    A consortium comprising CKH and HWL wins a KCRC contract for the Tung Chung Station Package Three development.

  • HPH signs a joint venture agreement with two local Indonesian companies to build and operate the container port at Indonesia's port of Bojonegara. 

  • HPH has been awarded the concession to operate two ports in Panama, Cristobal and Balboa, which are located at the opposite ends of the Panama Canal.

  • Nuance-Watson (HK) Limited, a joint-venture between A.S. Watson and Nuance, wins the licences from the Airport Authority Hong Kong for the sale of perfumes and cosmetics (9 outlets), an airside general merchandise (12 outlets) and a specialty store licence to sell renowned fashion brands and audio-visual equipment (4 outlets) at the Hong Kong Inernational Airport at Chek Lap Kok.

  • Hutchison Telecommunications Limited (HTL) purchases a 19.9 per cent interest in Western PCS Corp and approximately 5 per cent in its parent Western Wireless Corp - a leading provider of cellular and personal communications services in the US. 

  • Procter & Gamble (P&G) and Hutchison Whampoa Limited reach an agreement to re-structure the terms of their joint venture holding company, Procter & Gamble-Hutchison Limited, in Mainland China. The agreement allows P&G to increase its ownership from 69 per cent to 80 per cent by early 1998 and increase to 100 per cent by 2017 through the exercise of options over the next 20 years.

  • Hutchison Whampoa raised USD2 billion in bonds. This is the company's first ever international bond offering and the biggest Hong Kong corporate bond deal in history.

  • Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) launches its third digital mobile telephone service - PCS. Known as Everyday PCS, the new addition strengthens the Group's competitive edge in that it is the only mobile telephone company in Hong Kong that operates three digital networks.

  • Hutchison Ports (Europe) Limited, a subsidiary of HPH, enters into a conditional agreement to buy Thamesport, the container terminal on the Isle of Grain in Kent, the United Kingdom.
