  • HWL consolidates the marketing and operatonal resources of HWL's mobile telephone, paging and fixed line network services in Hong Kong and announces the formation of Hutchison Telecommunicatons (Hong Kong) Limited.

  • HWL announces the formation of Orange plc as the holding company of the Hutchison Telecommunicatons (UK) Group and their intention to float at least 25 per cent of Orange plc in London and NASDAQ.

  • The TACS analogue cellular telephone network closes down and is completely replaced by the GSM digital system.

  • The River Trade Terminal Company (RTTC) is awarded the contract to design, develop and operate the River Trade Terminal in Tuen Mun. Hutchison International Port Holdings owns a 37 per cent stake in RTTC.

  • The global offering of 30 per cent shares in Orange plc completes. The Group's effective interest in the company is reduced to 48.2 per cent. Shares in Orange plc begins trading in London and NASDAQ.

  • Hutchison Ports Xiamen signs agreement with Xiamen Haicang Port Services Company to own and operate two berths in Haicang, Xiamen.

  • The Hong Kong Government awards two berths at CT9 to HIT. As part of the arrangement, the Hutchison Group constructs a screen building at a North Tsing Yi site, which is zoned for commercial use.

  • A.S. Watson forms a joint venture with Thailand's Central Department Store, to open Watson's personal stores in Thailand.

  • A 50-50 company between HWL and CKH enters into a joint-venture agreement with KCRC to develop a residential project at Hung Shui Kiu, Yuen Long.
